Seraphim & Bentley - Grace in Everyday Encounters
Terry L. Mullins
Contemplative Practice Reflection
Seraphim (my granddaughter) meeting Bentley (a dog)
Practice: Spent thirty minutes in a location where I sat and quietly observed people. What I noticed, What thoughts crossed my mind. What my senses noticed. What forms of communication I observed.
People enjoying the town square on a March Saturday
Market community, human strangers gathering together
The hearing of light, gentle conversations
The seeing of a friendly wave, an acknowledging head nod
Shared smiles and delight – affirming ambiance
Tasting of ice cream, cookies, coffee, gumballs – heavenly tasty morsels
Light laughter, gentle music - strings, a ripple of wind whispering “enjoy”
A beautiful day - cool, happy, bright, nostalgic – shared moments in time
And then . . .
A gentle and curious approach
A shared excitement of encounte
Little legs moving, a falling down to hands and knees
Bentley’s belly to the grass, dug in, stretched out in anticipation
Paws gently tapping out in front of his head warmly snuggled into the grass
Seraphim now surely and slowly crawling up to say hello
Bentley tenderly rolls over and sprawls out for a belly rub
“Life meeting life” – ‘Seraphim meeting Bentley’
Spirit meeting Spirit?
Heart rending beauty
Holy the delight of loving encounter
Holy – the goodness of the square
The goodness of life unfolding before me – graced!
