The Clumsy Catch - Hearing the Voice That Calls You Amazing
Terry L. Mullins
Contemplative Reflection
Baseball Story - Let There Be Bareness
Bareness, plain, not-extraordinary, naked, a feeling of exposure, shame
These things hurt!
They makes my heart ache, hurt
Memories of playing baseball
Right field, maybe there won’t be a ball hit there
Oh no, fly ball, it is going to him!!!
“Catch it, Catch it, Catch that ball!”
Running kind of fast.
stumbling falling tumbling reaching out stretching-my-arms down I go
sprawled out in the grass
“Did he catch it!?!?”
Getting up slowly
Embarrassed
checking my glove
“Wow, it’s there, I caught it, I CAUGHT it!”
Jogging back to the dugout
I hear the voices . . .
“Man, he is clumsy”
“Why does he always stumble”
That guy always falls down, what a klutz
Glad he is not on our team
So many eyes on my stumbling
So many eyes on my fall
My clumsiness in close view
Bare-ness
Ouch!
Then, I hear my coach say
Great catch Terry, you never make it look easy
But you always make the CATCH – You are amazing!
His words make my heart beat again
I smile,
Sit down on end of the bench
And I am okay for a bit
Until the next clumsy catch
Prayer – Lord, may I listen to the true voice, listen to your voice, that says “You are amazing!
Thank you, coach!
