The Northern Lights - A Lifelong Invitation to Seeing
Terry L. Mullins
Contemplative Practice Reflection
The Auroras Borealis
The Auroras Borealis
First seen as a toddler
I wonder about the wonder
That stirred in my heart
Back in my birthplace - Alaska
Beginnings of sacred seeing
The invitation to Visio Divina
And neuropathway soaking in
Of magical sight
The Trinity dancing?
I wonder about
All my body and brain took in
Did it descend deeply
Into my heart
As a two-year-old,
Primal learning?
Perhaps
I traveled back
To Alaska at Twenty-two
1980 - for one year
To remote Alaska
Two hundred miles west of Fairbanks
Alone – an Air Force assignment
Leaving everything
And everyone
Behind
For a return Journey
My heartbeat
With a whisper
From my center
Feeling a deep sense of
Return
Rhythm
Knowing
Wonder.
I remember a yearning
Burning deep inside me
To see again
To ponder again
The mysterious glow
Of dancing light
And brilliant colors
Flickering
In the dark night
Of the nighttime sky
In “The Last frontier”
Of Alaska
To lay my eyes again
On the Auroras Borealis
“The Northern Lights”
Behold again
This beauty of the Lord
So spectacular
So loud to the eyes
but so wondrously
Quiet to the ears!
I smile at this
As I feel my heart warm
At the thought of the
Solitude
Stillness
Silence
That seems so
Deeply rooted in my
Heart beginnings
Of childhood
Thank you, Jesus,
For this journey of imagination
The lifelong invitation
To sacred seeing
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
